The morning started off wrong: After making my coffee, I realized my roommate drank the last of the milk. Awesome. I dragged myself to the store wearing my bathrobe because I was already in a bad mood. When I got back to the apartment, milk in hand, I noticed something was missing: My handwoven artisanal Nepalese rug was gone! This was a rug so beautiful and comfortable you could take a nap on it and make it your Match.com profile photo. The friggin’ worst part was that there was a furry, French vanilla ice cream-colored blob of a rug in its place. About an hour later, my roommate strolls in.
“Oh by the way, dude,” he said, “someone paid me for my last job with this new rug. I threw that old crappy one away. Hope you like it.”
What the %%#^&!!
To say I was bummed would be a massive understatement. I had that rug for years. It was one of the first grown-up things I bought, and it really tied the room together. How would I ever replace it, and how could I get rid of this hideous cotton ball on the floor? I couldn’t tell my roommate to trash it because he loved it. I thought about letting my dog “accidentally” pee on it. Or burning it. Or faking a robbery and saying someone stole it.
As fate would have it, my roommate suddenly decided to move back home, and he took his furry floor situation with him. Problem solved. It was time to start looking for a new love, uhhh, rug.
I didn’t feel like scouring Amazon or venturing out to furniture stores. One day, I was scrolling through Instagram and came across an online rug company called Wovenly. I loved their photos—a few reminded me of my dear departed Nepalese rug. When I poked around on the Wovenly website, I saw every size, color, and style of rug I could want, from tribal to contemporary and more. Plus, they had free shipping and returns; there’s even a 60-day trial period where you can send the rug back if you don’t like it.
Within about 10 minutes, I decided to go with Amma. The mix of red, orange, and green colors really popped, and it had this retro feel that would go with the laid-back vibe in my living room. And it was supposed to be good for high-traffic areas. I was sold. About a week later, they delivered the rug, and I unrolled it with a ton of anticipation.
It was better than perfect. The softness of the new rug under my feet made me forget about the old one. It’s my girlfriend’s favorite place to relax after work (mine, too). Netflix nights have never been better. The sofa and coffee table even look like new because of the rug. One of my friends asked, “What’d you do? It looks different…like, good different.” It’s cool; I could have parties here and feel proud about my place.
Although I was forced to buy a new rug against my will, it ended up working out in my favor. Not only does this new rug tie the room together, it takes it to the next level.
